Archives de la Ville de Lausanne (AVL) is a project realised in the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (HES-SO) at Yverdon in Collaboration with the Archives of the Lausanne City (2005-2007).

The Lausanne City Archives preserves the cultural and historical audiovisual documents related to the Lausanne city.

The project aims to provide adapted tools for semi-automatic description and searching of the audiovisual documents of the Lausanne City Archives.

The semi-automatic description is realised in two main steps : segmentation and annotation.

The segmentation begins with an automatic detection of the video shots and is followed by the interaction of the user to integrate shots into scenes, topics or other required segments.

Each of the created segments can be described using free text and controlled vocabularies. In addition, the system provides a flexible visualisation tool which facilitates the selection of video sub-parts and their visualisation.
